C.S. Lewis (1898-1963)
The author of over forty books, works of poetry, and essays, fiction and nonfiction, Clive Staples "Jack" Lewis is best known for his children’s classic "The Chronicles of Narnia" and his Christian apologetics work "The Screwtape Letters." Born in Ireland on the 29th of November, 1898, he was the younger son of Albert Lewis, a solicitor, and Florence Lewis. He had a brother three years his senior, Warren Hamilton "Warnie" Lewis, with whom he created the world of Boxen, a fantasy land heavily influenced by the works of Beatrix Potter. Lewis spent a period of fourteen years, between the age of 15 and 29, as an atheist, regained a belief in the existence of a god, and then at age 33 became a Christian. In 1956 Lewis married American writer Joy Davidman Gresham. Lewis and Joy were married while she was, by all appearances, dying of cancer, and though she survived that bout, the cancer returned and she died in 1960. Broken-hearted by her death, Lewis wrote his book "A Grief Observed," a plaintive account of his sorrow. He continued to raise Joy’s two sons by her first marriage, Douglas and David, until he died in 1963.
