Plot
It's 1724. Soon after Rachel Howell joins her wealthy father in Charles Town, South Carolina, she becomes friends with Sally, the tavern keeper's daughter. When twelve-year-old Rachel is forbidden to see Sally, the girls find a secret meeting place - a deserted island in the Ashley River. There they discover mysterious carvings, a trail, a hidden lagoon...and danger that threatens everything Rachel holds dear.
Morality
Rachel is a good girl and loves her father very much. But her father can be blinded by Rachel's step mother to make the wrong choices for Rachel. Rachel disobeys her father when she is not allowed to see Sally. As usual, everything works out at the end.

Two pirates get into a fight on the beach, and the ship that Rachel is traveling on is attacked by pirates; no one is hurt.

Conclusion
This book was very mysterious and exciting. Although Rachel's step mother is mean at times and her father doesn't always believe Rachel, the story was still very good, since everything worked on in the end. Like many books, though, her disobedience is portrayed as justifiable.
