Madeleine L'Engle (1918-2008)
The early life of Madeleine L’Engle, born in 1918, can very clearly be seen portrayed in her character Meg Murry of A Wrinkle in Time fame. At the private school which L’Engle attended in New York, she was considered below average and stupid by her teachers — a fact which shows in Meg’s low estimation of herself in L’Engle’s novel. L'Engle's first story, A Small Rain, was published in 1945 and began the long line of novels she wrote from the age of twenty-seven to her death at the age of eighty-eight in 2008. Her Time Quintet shows a great deal of L’Engle’s beliefs and character; she believed in universal salvation and placed a great emphasis on God’s love (which can clearly be seen in her Quintet, especially An Acceptable Time). Though her Quintet series is very popular among fantasy and science fiction readers, her books for older readers contain mature content.
