Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865)
Popularly known as Mrs. Gaskell, this English novelist was born Elizabeth Stevenson to parents William (a Unitarian minister) and Elizabeth (who died only a few months after giving birth to her namesake). The young Elizabeth was then sent to live with her aunt, Hannah Lumb, in the county of Cheshire, where she passed most of her childhood and which is mirrored in her novel "Cranford." At age 23 she married Unitarian minister William Gaskell, and they later moved to the industrial city of Manchester. She and William had five children. In 1848 Gaskell published her first novel, "Mary Barton"; during her writing career she was friends with such famous authors as Charles Dickens and Charlotte Bronte, as well as various social reformers (such as Harriet Beecher Stowe). She died in the county of Hampshire at the age of 55.
