Rosemary Sutcliff (1920-1992)
Rosemary Sutcliff was an acclaimed writer of children's books and young adult novels, most well-known for her historical fictions set in Romano-Britain, Saxon-Britain, or dealing with Arthurian legend. She was born in the county of Surrey, England, but because her father was an officer in the Royal Navy, she and her family spent much of their time where he was stationed on the island of Malta. She was sickly as a child and had to use a wheelchair for the majority of her life, but she did manage to attend an art school and graduate from its General Art Course. Her love of Britain and the legends surrounding it were cultured by her mother throughout Sutcliff's childhood, but she did not publish any of her writings until the age of thirty. After that, however, she wrote constantly up until the day of her death.
