An interesting book, but with some poor content.

Plot

Mellie Turpin grew up with a fairy as a playmate until kindergarten. Crazy, right? That's what her classmates thought. Ever since then she has been constantly teased and called "Fairy Fat". This is why Mellie is relieved to start over her life when she and her family move to her grandpa's old inn. But instead of escaping all the teasing about fairies, Mellie finds herself caught up in a old family legacy that includes a powerful ring - that somebody wants to steal.

Morality

One of the fairies who Mellie thought was her friend turned out to be a traitor and was using her to experiment for his evil plan. Her parents attempt suicide. Mellie's classmates tease her and are very mean to her; Mellie dreams of getting her revenge by becoming an overwhelmingly successful scientist. This theme of bitterness plays a fairly large role.

Spiritual Content

Considering the story is about fairies, there is lots of magic.

Violence

After drinking an elixir that shows them the truth about everything, including negative thoughts that anyone thinks about them, characters attempt to jump off a roof in depression. The fairies save them, though, so all is well.

Drug and Alcohol Content

Mellie's grandfather and one of the fairies was often drunk and Mellie recalls her grandfather throwing whiskey bottles at her family's car. At one point Mellie's father is tempted to drink as well.

Sexual Content

At the end of the story a boy attempts to kiss Mellie but doesn't. And at the beginning some of her classmates humiliate her by putting a tampon in her back pocket, which everyone sees when she goes to the board to do a math problem.

Crude or Profane Language or Content

Mellie mentions that her parents and teacher say bad words but the actual word is never stated. "Oh my God" and variations of that may be used.

Conclusion

This is a really good book with lots of suspense and magic, which I enjoy, but there could be less drinking in it and there was one disturbing part where Mellie was turned into a giant drooling frog.
